Students Steph Putsch (GER) and Mike Doleuze (FRA) give you an insight into their week on the Irish National Stud Breeding Course.
It’s been an exciting week here at the Irish National Stud, complemented by beautiful weather as we head into Springtime. With our students gearing up for the Cheltenham festival and some of them busy at work preparing for their Godolphin Flying Start interviews, it’s been a breath of fresh air as we look forward to even sunnier days.
We started off the week by being treated to a delicious Italian meal at the Stud restaurant. With both students and staff in attendance, it was a great opportunity to socialise outside of a work setting, and enjoy Kildare’s finest Tiramisu!
Mike spent a productive week in Blandford and Strawhall Yards, taking care of our mares and foals (his favourite is a smart Roaring Lion filly), as well as shadowing the horse dentist. As a former jockey and with hopes of becoming a future trainer, he knows how important equine dentistry is to their performance on the track and seeing the work done first hand was a great experience.
On the other hand, Steph spent a fantastic week on night watch at the foaling unit. It was a busy few days, with the simultaneous arrival of warmer weather and more than a dozen newborn foals. Seeing the foals come into their own and show off their looks and personalities even after a few hours of life was an experience to remember.
One of the highlights of our week was getting a lecture by Conor O’Neill, CEO of Punchestown racecourse. With so much experience under his belt at such a young age, he gave us great advice on how to successfully run a business in the Thoroughbred industry, and how best to get a jump start if we wish to pursue careers on the track. Most importantly, Conor gave us some of his tips for Cheltenham in the coming week, though we won’t disclose his picks just yet…
