Haatem, under the guidance of trainer Richard Hannon and owned by Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah, stormed to victory in the prestigious Gr.3 Craven Stakes last Friday, solidifying his position as a contender for the upcoming 2,000 Guineas. Bred by Hyde Park Stud, Haatem has been a shining star for his sire Phoenix of Spain, notably clinching the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes in 2023.
Reflecting on Haatem’s impressive performance, trainer Richard Hannon praised the colt’s prowess, stating, “He is a good horse and always has been.” Hannon highlighted Haatem’s notable achievements, including a victory in the Vintage Stakes, with subsequent successes further underlining his potential.
Hannon also commented on Haatem’s adaptability, expressing confidence in the colt’s ability to handle the mile distance. “I said to Sean that I thought he’d get the trip very well,” remarked Hannon, noting the recent trend favoring horses racing prominently. “He looked pretty good there,” added the trainer, emphasizing Haatem’s convincing display.
Looking ahead to the 2000 Guineas, Hannon suggested that Haatem’s odds of 25-1 might underestimate his capabilities, particularly given his recent performance.
The success of Phoenix of Spain continued beyond Haatem’s victory, with the three-year-old filly Zaynab securing victory in a maiden race at the Curragh for owners Bective Stud and trainer Gordon Elliot on just her second start. Zaynab, purchased as a foal for €82,000 at Goffs.
Furthermore, Flying Finn, bred by Piercetown Stud, delivered a commanding performance in her handicap debut at Ripon, winning by an impressive 6 1/2 lengths for trainer Adrian Keatley.
With Haatem’s triumph and the continued success of Phoenix of Spain’s progeny, the future looks very promising for the son of Lope de Vega.
Phoenix of Spain stands for €10,000, contact the stud office for details.
