Foals to Follow

17th Apr 2018

This year the Irish National Stud & Gardens is launching our Foals to Follow. We will introduce you to some of the foals, give you updates and let you enjoy their story.

Neuquen

The Irish National Stud is delighted to introduce the first two of our foals to follow. On the 20th February 2018, Neuquen, one of the many mares that live here, gave birth to a beautiful colt. At approximately 7:00am, Neuquen broke waters and welcomed her new son into the world. The bay colt is also a son of the €40,000 stallion Gleneagles. The sire was a very successful racehorse, winning 4 Group 1 races in Ireland and England. Gleneagles now stands in Coolmore Stud alongside his dad Galileo.

Neuquen and her foal

Before becoming a mum and retiring to the Irish National Stud, Neuquen was a racehorse based in France, winning 2 races at 2 and 3 years. She has had 3 previous foals before being bought by the Irish National Stud at the Arqana Mares Sale in December 2017.

Both mare and foal are doing fantastic and the colt is quickly doubling in size. His favourite hobby now, apart from eating grass and spending time with his mum, is playing with all his friends in the Kildare Yard. Although he always makes time for some cuddles and scratches with anyone that visits him! Poor Neuquen has a hard time keeping up with her playful little man, although all that fun in the paddock during the day makes him tired so he enjoys a snooze in the cosy straw bedded stable every evening. This gives the hard working mare some quiet time to eat her dinner in peace.

Love Street

The second of our foals to follow is another colt born on the 1st march 2018. At around 5:00 in the evening, Love Street began sweating up before giving birth to a handsome bay colt. The colt is by first season sire Awtaad who stands in Derrinstown Stud for a fee of €15,000. The colt was greatly anticipated as this is the first year that Awtaads foals have hit the ground, and he didn’t disappointed! Awtaad won the Group 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh as a 3 year old for trainer Kevin Prendergast.

Love Street foal, only a couple of days old

Love Street is a 5 year old mare and a daughter of the classy American sire, Kittens Joy. She won 1 race in France at 3 years of age before being purchased by the Irish National Stud in the Tattersalls December Sale in 2017 and moving to the rich pastures of Kildare to finish out her pregnancy.

The Love Street colt is improving every day and loves nothing more than to play games of chasing with the other foals around the paddocks in the Kildare Yard. He is getting stronger and faster as the days go by and soon even his mum won’t be able to keep up with him! After showing off how fast he can run, he stops to get a well-deserved drink and a little nap to re-charge.

Make sure to stop by the Kildare Yard when visiting The Irish National Stud to see our foals to follow. The mares will be wearing a leather neck-strap with their names on them to differentiate them from the other mares, and at this age the foals are never too far behind.
