First yearlings by Classic winner Phoenix of Spain were well received by buyers at Europe’s yearling sales. His highest priced yearling, a filly out of Thames Pageant (Dansili) bred by Pier House Stud sold for €200,000 to Ben McElroy. The regally bred filly is a half-sister to G2 Breeders Cup Juvenile Tuft Sprint winner and Royal Ascot Queen Mary second TWILIGHT GLEAMING and is set to run in the colours of the same owner and trainer in Wesley Ward and Stonestreet Stables.
WH Bloodstock pulled off yet another successful pinhook with their €21,000 Goffs November foal sale purchase, Phoenix of Spain colt x Chicita Banana selling for £105,000 to Ben Brookhouse at Goffs Doncaster yearling sale. Chicita Banana, a daughter of Danehill Dancer from the family of Champion Palace Pier, has produced five winners from six runners to date including BT placed Banana Split.
Leading trainer Roger Varian proved a fond supporter of stock by Phoenix of Spain. He now has three under his watch for the 2023 flat season. His purchases included €85,000 Goffs Orby buy out of Blacktype producer Cleanaghcastle Lady, 70,000gns purchase out of Pearly Empress (from the family of G1 winner Pearls Galore) and 40,000gns purchase out of Invincible Spirt mare Navette (1/2 sister to G2 winner Real World).
Other notable homes for Phoenix of Spain’s first crop two-year-olds include, Charlie Hills (x2), Richard Hannon(x2), Johnny Murtagh, Paddy Twomey, Mark Johnston.
