Group winning glory continues for Phoenix of Spain

On 21 September 2025, Caballo De Mar added Group 3 glory to his growing reputation, with victory in the 141st Deutsches St. Leger at Dortmund.

 

Caballo De Mar started the race tracking Waldnebel, who set the pace. With De Vries settling him in second, the plan was patience and timing. Over the trip, that proved wise. In the straight, Caballo De Mar swept past Waldnebel and pulled away to win by two and three-quarter lengths.

 

It was a return to form: earlier in the season he had been runner‑up in competitive races (such as the Chester Cup and Copper Horse Stakes) and had also won multiple competitive races. It was back‑to‑back St Legers for Scott: George Scott also saddled Prydwen to win this same race in 2024, making this his second consecutive success in the Deutsches St. Leger.

 

International ambitions:

Following this win, Scott indicated plans for Caballo De Mar to campaign in the Middle East. Races in Saudi Arabia (potentially the Red Sea Handicap) and Dubai (potentially the Gold Cup on World Cup Night) are on the radar.

 

Caballo De Mar was bred by Barouche Stud, the son of Phoenix of Spain realised €33,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale when selling to JS Bloodstock/G Scott from Acorn Stud (Wicklow).
