Spanish Phoenix soars to success for Phoenix Of Spain

Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain gained his first success as a sire on Saturday April 29th when the Andrew Balding trained Spanish Phoenix made all for an impressive six and a half-length success in the Atlantic Pale Ale two year old maiden over five furlongs at Leicester. Having finished a promising fourth on debut, Oisin Murphy’s mount travelled powerfully throughout on the front end before pulling clear of his rivals under two furlongs out and once shaken up put the race to bed approaching the final furlong to record a visually impressive success.

Bred by The Freedom March Syndicate, Spanish Phoenix was a €55,000 Goffs Orby Sale purchase by Javier Maldonado and is second winner out of the half sister to G3p Bell Rock who comes from the family of Classic winner Speciosa. With ninety seven two year olds to run for him this year, Phoenix Of Spain’s progeny hold two notable entries at premier UK tracks this week in the form of the Richard Hannon trained Haatem (entered Goodwood Friday) and Phoenix Duchess trained by Harry Eustace (entered Newmarket Friday).
