CABALLO DE MAR further enhanced his reputation as one of Europe’s premier staying performers with a commanding victory in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup, securing the tenth success of his outstanding career.
The son of Phoenix of Spain’s impressive résumé already includes Group 1 victories in both the Prix du Cadran and Prix Vicomtesse Vigier, and this latest triumph took his career earnings beyond €900,000.
Trainer George Scott was delighted to see his stable star return to his very best ahead of a planned return to France for another tilt at the Group 1 Prix du Cadran.

“We really wanted to see this from Caballo De Mar to send him back to Paris, he’s two from two there. He loves Longchamp and he loves the tempo of that two miles four.
It was a golden opportunity for him today, it was a penalty kick really and he took it. They don’t always. You can train in the gym all you like but if you come out in the afternoon and get into the heat of the battle that’s when you really see the true colours of an athlete.
He’d just shirked it a couple of times so I wasn’t sure, but when he was in the paddock I thought he was on it, I thought it was game time.”
– George Scott, trainer
Bred by Barouche Stud, CABALLO DE MAR was sold by Jerome Hulin’s Acorn Stud to Billy Jackson-Stops and George Scott for just €33,000 at the 2022 September Yearling Sale.
CABALLO DE MAR will bid to preserve his unbeaten record at Paris Longchamp when he attempts to successfully defend his crown in the Group 1 Prix du Cadran in three weeks’ time.
Phoenix of Spain has 12 yearlings catalogued in next weeks Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale Part I and a further 16 yearlings in Part II.
