It was the inspiring vision of one William Hall Walker who created the Irish National Stud over a century ago. The eccentric Colonel had a penchant for astrology and used to select his racehorses according to the stars under which they were born.
Although his breeding method was considered preposterous by the establishment, he became one of the leading racehorse owners of the time and indeed ‘lent’ one of his horses to the King, which went on to win the most coveted prize of all – the Epsom Derby.
Hall Walker also takes credit for developing the first ever Japanese Garden in Ireland.
Importing many plants and species directly, including the famous Tea House, the gardens took seven years to complete and remain one of Ireland’s national treasures.
Gifted to the State in 1915, the Irish National Stud & Gardens has flourished both as a tourist attraction and on the worldwide horseracing stage, claiming many Champions through the years.
