Haatem Clinches Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot

Haatem once again lit up the Royal Meeting with a commanding victory in Tuesday’s Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot, delivering for owner Wathnan Racing, trainer Richard Hannon, and jockey James Doyle.

The son of Phoenix Of Spain was a 27,000gns yearling purchase by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock from Sherbourne Lodge at the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

A dual Guineas-placed colt last season, Haatem settled well off the pace, navigated the race astutely, and unleashed a decisive turn of foot in the straight to seal victory under Doyle’s confident guidance

Richard Hannon praised the colt’s progress throughout his career and especially over the summer, declaring:

“He’s an amazing horse and a pleasure to be involved with, for old connections and new connections… he makes you remember why you train horses.”

Hannon hinted that Haatem could return to a mile later in the season but noted that the form of this mile-and-a-quarter victory might open doors to higher targets like the Eclipse, possibly requiring supplementation

Victory in the Wolferton brought Haatem his second win at Royal Ascot—following his 2024 triumph in the Jersey Stakes.

Connections aren’t ruling out a future return to a mile for Haatem, but the impressive handling of this longer trip makes the Eclipse and other mid-season middle-distance Group races logical targets. A decision on supplemental entries is expected following the colt’s subsequent work at Hannon’s stable
