We are thrilled to announce that we’ve now welcomed over 100 foals this season here at the Irish National Stud! Each one brings its own unique charm and personality to our stables, and we couldn’t be more excited to watch them grow and develop.
Angus, our first-born foal of the season, holds a special place in our hearts. He is a colt sired by one of our stallions, Phoenix of Spain, and the bay mare, Across the Sea. Born on the 24th of January, Angus entered the world weighing a healthy 57 kilograms. Now, at nearly 8 weeks old, he’s thriving!
He was initially born jet-black, but like his dad, his grey roots are now emerging around his nose, mouth and legs, and he will progressively get lighter as he ages. By the time he is a yearling he will be a dark grey.
Angus is a playful and mischievous foal, known for his antics in the paddock where he spends his days with his mum and all the other mares and foals. He’s already showing a curious and adventurous spirit, exploring his surroundings with great energy.
As Angus continues to grow, he’s transitioning to a diet of hard food alongside the lush grass of the paddocks. It’s an exciting milestone in his development, marking his gradual journey towards independence.
In his first week of life, Angus received essential care including microchipping and marking, ensuring he’s properly identified and documented. Regular health check-ups are also part of his routine, he was wormed at 6 weeks, and he is due his second dose in the coming weeks. The farrier paid him a visit on the 20th of February to trim his hooves, ensuring his conformation remains correct.
Last week, his mum, Across the Sea was scanned, 17 days from being covered by Phoenix of Spain, and is now in foal once again, so Angus is going to be a big brother!
We will be following Angus along his journey until he is ready for his next chapter as a yearling. Keep an eye out on our social media for video updates on Angus and behind the scenes clips of his adventures!
