Oisin Murphy delivered a masterclass aboard Caballo De Mar (Phoenix of Spain) as the 5-year-old showcased his trademark stamina and tenacity to capture Thursday’s Gr.1 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at ParisLongchamp for Trainer George Scott and Owners, Victorious Forever.
A proven stayer who claimed last year’s Gr.1 Prix du Cadran on Arc weekend, Caballo De Mar was forced to adapt to a markedly slower early tempo this time, however he took control at the top of the straight and refused to yield, holding off a blanket of late challengers in a thrilling finish.
Santorini Star rallied strongly on the rail to grab second, with favourite Al Riffa in third and Asmarani close behind in fourth.
Connections now have their sights set firmly on Royal Ascot for the Gr.1 Gold Cup.
“It was pretty straightforward,” Oisin Murphy told reporters. “It turned into a bit of a dash in the false straight, but he did it well.”
George Scott commented “He just tries so hard. He’s such an individual character and the whole team does such a good job with him, he’s one in a million”
