Lady Of Spain’s Triumph at Sandown

On 30 August 2025, Sandown Park a stunning performance from Lady Of Spain as she remained unbeaten, capturing the BetMGM Atalanta Stakes (Group 3) with style and determination. Trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Ray Dawson, the four‑year‑old filly defied expectations and an extended layoff to secure her fifth consecutive win.

Race recap

As the race began Lady of Spain was held up in mid-division. She gained headway when following the leaders and switched right from over 1f out. As the finish unfolded Lady of Spain was  disputing lead inside final furlong and stayed on well to lead towards the finish. In a thrilling stretch, she rallied under Ray Dawson’s guidance to edge out Juddmonte’s Blue Bolt by half a length. The victory extended her perfect record to 5 wins from 5 starts.
Connections and Future Plans
Following the win, odds were slashed to 10/1 for the Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr.1), and her connections are also eyeing the Prix de l’Opéra(Gr.1) at ParisLongchamp, signaling their belief in her top-tier potential.

Bred by Littlejohn Bloodstock Ltd, Lady of Spain realised £40,000 GNS at the October Book 2 yearling Sale at Tattersalls.

In a recent edition of Good Morning Bloodstock, Martin Stevens wrote, “Timing is everything, and Phoenix Of Spain also benfited from a purple patch for his runners at the outset of the 2024 breeding season, with Alperatz finishing a close second in the Park Express Stakes at the Curragh on the first day of the turf Flat season, King Of Spain hosing up in a competitive handicap at the Lincoln meeting at Doncaster and Kaatem a wide-margin victory in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket.

The upshot was that Phoenix Of Spain covered a bumper book of 217 mares, including 34 black-type performers, last year. The book featured some real humdingers: an Irish 1,000 Guineas winner in Betrah, as well as the dams of Blue Point, Gold Phoenix and Haatem.”
