Join CKAS for a Heritage Week Lecture on the History of the Irish National Stud & Gardens

We’re delighted to be hosting a special Heritage Week event here at the Irish National Stud & Gardens on Tuesday 20th August from 7pm to 9pm, as part of the County Kildare Archaeological Society’s Heritage Week events programme.

Historian and author Declan Monaghan will deliver a fascinating talk based on his recent book, The Irish National Stud, 1900–2025: Horses, Politics and Elitism. This well-researched study delves into the history of the Irish National Stud, tracing its foundation under Colonel William Hall-Walker, its role during British and Irish political upheaval, and its continued impact on elite Thoroughbred breeding in Ireland and beyond.

Today, the Irish National Stud & Gardens remains one of Ireland’s most influential stud farms, and is one of the world’s leading tourist attractions. Declan’s lecture will offer a fresh and informed perspective, grounded in extensive archival research, that places the Stud within a broader context of horse racing, Irish political history, and cultural heritage.

Admission is free, but advance booking is essential via Eventbrite.

We’re proud to support the County Kildare Archaeological Society in presenting this Heritage Week lecture and look forward to welcoming visitors, locals, and heritage enthusiasts for what promises to be a thought-provoking evening.
