Unbelievable start to National Defense’s career as a stallion with two winners from two runners last weekend. The first, Filly of Malta, is out of Amusing Plan and ran her first race on Saturday 8th of May on the racetrack of Siracusa in Italy. Sold by Oghill House Stud at the Tattersalls Ireland Yearlings sales in September 2020, the filly was purchased by Scuderia Cuschieri. Trained by Cannella Antonino and ridden by Rizzo Piscopo Salvator, Filly of Malta looks like a potential star for the future.
The day after, National Defense was represented by another impressive filly. On the other side of the ocean on the racetrack of Belmont Park in America, Twilight Gleaming didn’t leave any chance to her rivals. Trained by Wesley A. Ward, the filly first performed in April at Keeneland finishing second, with a very promising debut. In this Maiden Special Weight she proved she was a very special filly full of potential. With her jockey Irad Ortiz Jr, who was associated to her for the first time, they travelled easily all along the race, winning by 7 lengths, destroying their competitors. After this mind-boggling victory, Twilight Gleaming’s entourage is aiming the filly for Royal Ascot.
This daughter of National Defense, out of the dam Thames Pageant, was bred by Pier House Stud and sold at the Goffs Orby for £75,000 to McElroy on behalf of Stonestreet Farm.
Congratulations to all the connections of these two fillies, who gave National Defense a perfect start for his new career as a stallion at the Irish National Stud.
