Student Blog from Conor Hyland and Rebecca Fitzpatrick

Conor Hyland (IRE) and Rebecca Fitzpatrick (IRE) give you an insight into their fifth week here on the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Course.

The Irish National Stud had a very important birthday during the week, as leading sire Invincible Spirit celebrated his 22nd birthday on the 17th of February. With the 2019 breeding season well underway, another busy season in the breeding shed lies ahead, and hopefully his progeny can continue their success on the track.

On Tuesday the 19th we had our first student trip to The Lord Bagenal Inn, Co.Carlow. We got the opportunity to take part in the annual Mark O’Hanlon Memorial Cup Racing & Breeding quiz. It was a full house of racing professionals and we were split up into teams of 4. We got a chance to test our thoroughbred knowledge amongst the professionals. The quiz was sponsored by The Irish Field & Racing Post and was MC’d by Kevin O’Ryan, with proceeds going to the Injured Jockey Fund. Power team Bobby O Ryan, Mouse O Ryan, Ger Connelly & Gary O Brien took the trophy for the 4th time running.

Back at the foaling unit our fellow students, Jamie, Lucie, Jock & Susannah welcomed 16 new foals. They will soon join the other foals in Kildare Yard.

Stay tuned for next week to hear from students Florence and Niall.
