It is getting near Happy Holidays time, a time of looking back and looking forward. It is coming near to the seventh anniversary of my father’s passing in 2005 which happened on mid-Winter’s day. I was reminded of it recently when the flautist Eddie Reynolds, who played beautifully that day, called in to say hello. As we lined up wracked with grief he started playing a plaintive tune which we gradually recognised as “Are You Right There Michael, Are You Right?”. So the boss got a most appropriate send-off with the laughter filling his surroundings as it always had.
Shorter-term reflections see a year with many positives brought to a peak by the sale of INS-bred-but-long-since-sold Seeharn for £950,000, indirectly enhancing the value of her weanling full sibling here at Tully. Our new horses, Dragon Pulse and Famous Name are being well received and the bookings are coming in daily for all the horses. These investment decisions are votes for a brighter future and we hope the worst of the downturn is behind us.
I have been asked to take part in a seminar in Kilkenny on 16 January next on “Making Your Bloodstock Business Pay”. In an unconnected development I am reading “Thinking Fast and Slow” by Nobel winner Daniel Kahneman. This explores the two sides of brain function, the intuitive and the reflective. The guy sitting back analysing the market may not get near enough to the ringside to take part, yet the guy on the ringside may not be fully informed as he makes his quick decisions – to bid or to stop bidding. The winner is the one who gets the blend right, and then gets lucky!
On Friday, Lady O’Reilly will chair her last meeting of the Board of the INS. Her tenure has seen the most successful times in the stud’s long history and her knowledge of the bloodstock market worldwide is unparalleled. In giving of her time so generously among her many other commitments she is a fantastic asset for the stud and the wider Irish industry.
