January, new beginnings, new blog. The pace quickens daily and the Irish National Stud is buzzing. The foaling unit is open and filling up ready for the new crop and the stallion lists are doing the same. And Moscow Flyer is arriving today!
It is a great time of year, with the charge towards Cheltenham balanced by the Carnival in Dubai, reminding us that a new Flat season is coming soon, too. There is a great new determination coming through.
Recent headlines in the Financial Times included “Art Market beats equities for second year” and “Super-rich buying ever larger yachts” reflect what we witnessed in the Autumn in the bloodstock world. So maybe this time the optimism is firmly based on evidence.
A visit to the cinema to see Moneyball had me wondering is there some formula we have overlooked for analysing the bloodstock market, to give the elusive edge. More of that some other day.
A recent analysis of Kentucky stallions ran under a headline of “40 recommended Value Sires under $50,000” (Bill Oppenheim). If you asked in Europe for a similar list, what would you find? I am sure it includes our horses here, but I am also curious to revisit how we assess what is hot and what is not.
Today, we are concentrating on a celebrated gelding and our thanks to all at the IHWT for their care of Moscow Flyer for the last four years. Our visitors will love to see him. Be among them!
Happy New Year
