Make A Challenge, 5Yo son of Invincible Spirit was all class in the Sole Power Sprint Stakes at Naas on Saturday for trainer Denis Hogan and owners M G Hogan & Walter O’ Connor and James Joseph Reilly. Bred by Godolphin his dam is an unraced half-sister to 6f and 7f 2yo Group 1 winner Saoirse Abu, family of classic winners Balanchine and West Wind.
Racing Post analysis of race:
Make A Challenge made short work of his opponents here. Settled off the pace in the centre of the track, he made smooth progress to come and challenge over a furlong out and he quickened up smartly to put the race to bed like a good horse should. He’s developed into a very high-class sprinter, and one for the second half of the season more than anything when ease in the ground can be expected. He looks well capable of snaring a very good sprint before the season is out.
Denis Hogan Trainer commented ‘ Make A Challenge was class today. His run in the Group One at Ascot last year was very good when he got gobbled up late on over the six. Like Sceptical, he’s a five horse and keeping them apart will be the biggest problem! With hindsight, it’s a possible regret not running him in the King’s Stand. We thought he needed the extra few days, but we’ll look forward to him over five on another day.’
With his next likely target as the Gr.2 Greenland Stakes at The Curragh after his performance at Naas all of the big sprint races are open to him.
The following day at Kempton Park Irish National Stud home bred Cognac broke his maiden in style for trainer Mark Johnston and owners China Horse Club and Ballylinch Stud.
Cognac is the 7th foal of Rose de France; he is a brother to 4 winners including Cable Bay (7f Gr 2; RPR 117) and Indigo Balance (5f 2yo Listed; 104), closely related to a winner, half-brother to 5f-1m winner Sea Wolf (111). We look forward to seeinng him on the track again soon.
