Lucky Vega to stand at the Irish National Stud

22nd Oct 2021

Lucky Vega is the only son of Lope De Vega to win a Group 1 over 6 furlongs as a two-year-old. A dazzling debut winner at Naas Racecourse, Lucky Vega continued his career at The Curragh where he was narrowly beaten in the Group 2 Railway Stakes. On just his third start in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes he showed incredible speed and precocity to win by over three lengths beating Multiple Group 1 winner St Mark’s Basilica and Group 1 Prix Jean Prat winner Laws of Indices.

His jockey Shane Foley commented, “Lucky Vega was one of the quickest 2-year-olds I have ever ridden. He had an incredible burst of speed and his performance in the Phoenix Stakes, in particular, was exceptional. He trained on to be a top class three-year-old and always had a great attitude and will to win’.

Following a gallant half- length second in the Group 1 Middle Park stakes on his final start at two, he returned at three in the first Classic of the year the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket where he finished a close third before signing off his career with a fine second in the Group 1 St. James Palace at Royal Ascot.

‘Lucky Vega was always a pleasure to train and took his work very well. He had great balance, power and speed. I look forward to training his sons and daughters and I think he has all the credentials to make into a high-class stallion’, said trainer Jessica Harrington.

Lucky Vega is one of three winners out of unraced mare Queen of Carthage (USA). She is a daughter of top miler and Classic sire Cape Cross (Ire) and Group 1 Prix de l’Opera winner Satwa Queen (Fr). Queen Of Carthage (USA) gained further attention at the Goffs Orby sale with her Footstepsinthesand colt yearling selling for €630,000 to BBA Ireland’s Michael Donohoe, acting on behalf of Yulong Investments.

“Mr Zhang has obviously reinvested in this family showing the huge belief he has in Lucky Vega. He will be strongly supporting him at stud over the coming years. With his amazing blend of class and speed we believe Lucky Vega will produce precocious animals with great movement just like him,” said Donohoe.blank

A stud fee for Lucky Vega will be announced at a later date.
