Khalifa Sat 2nd in Epsom Derby

6th Jul 2020

Khalifa Sat, 3YO son of Free Eagle ran the race of his life on Saturday at Epsom finishing 2nd to Aidan O’ Brien’s Serpentine in the 241st renewal of the Epsom Derby. The ever improving colt finished ahead of no less seven Black Type winning horses including this years 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko.

Racing Post analysis ; Khalifa Sat, a maiden winner at Goodwood at the backend of last season and a narrow winner of the Cocked Hat Stakes over 1m3f at that venue on his comeback (just ahead of Emissary), he’s clearly a well-balanced individual, who excels on undulating tracks. Closely related to 2008 St Leger runner-up Unsung Heroine, he looks sure to be a player come the final Classic of the season at Doncaster in September.

Ahmed Al Shaikh, owner of the son of Free Eagle, was purchased by his trainer Andrew Balding from breeder Declan Phelan of Tullogher House Stud for 40,000 Euro as a yearling from Goffs. Khalifa Sat will now be targeted at all the major staying races in the world, including the St Leger (Doncaster, September 12), Melbourne Cup (Flemington, November 3) and Dubai Sheema Classic (Meydan, March 27, 2021).

Speaking to Gulf New his owner Ahmed Al Shaikh commented

“This is an unforgettable result, my best ever. Obviously I’m so excited about where we can go next with Khalifa Sat, who has proven that he’s a genuine stayer. It’s still early days but obviously all the world’s top races around 2,800 metres, and above, will be considered.

“When we bought him, with the help of Andrew (Balding, his trainer), he told me that this horse would be special. And Khalifa Sat has lived up to that boast. I’m so happy for Andrew as well.

“Horses like him come once in a lifetime and we will campaign him at the highest level before he eventually goes to stud, something that I’m so looking forward to as well. He has the potential to be a top stallion prospect.”

Khalifa Sat is a fine representative of his sire Free Eagle who is second on the leading second crop sires table just behind Night of Thunder (by prize money). We look forward to seeing him on the track soon.
