Charm Spirit was a ready winner of the QEII Stakes at Ascot at last Saturday’s Champions Weekend. He broke well from the stalls and was settled on the heels of the leaders under jockey Olivier Peslier. The field was brought along by the distinctive Top Notch Tonto but when things got serious two furlongs from home Charm Spirit was travelling with great purpose under a relaxed Peslier.
Jimmy Fortune tried to close the door on Peslier’s efforts on Tullius but with Charm Spirit going the better he was able to create his own racing room. Charm Spirit went away from that rival at the furlong pole and while the favourite Night of Thunder gave chase in the final 100 yards he finished a never nearer half a length second.
This is the third Gr.1 over a mile that Charm Spirit has won, having previously landed the Prix Jean Prat in Chantilly, and getting the better of Queen Anne victor Toronado in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.
The win means that of the 9 Gr.1 races over a mile open to three year old colts in Ireland, Britain and France, 7 of them have been won in 2014 by sons of Irish National Stud stallion, Invincible Spirit.
