Bee Delivery

Bee Delivery

10th Jul 2019

This year the Irish National Stud & Gardens has placed a huge focus on reducing its impact on the local environment and is focusing on helping the local wildlife to thrive. Part of this included joining the National Pollinator Plan, an initiative to help the

native bees and wildlife thrive.

‘The National Pollinator Plan is about all of us, from farmers to local authorities, to schools, gardeners and businesses, coming together to try to create an Ireland where pollinators can survive and thrive’.

In spring 2019 the Irish National Stud and Gardens took delivery of their first beehives. They were placed on new hive stands in the Apiary constructed by staff member, Gerry Duggan. Gerry also completed the beginners beekeeping course run by the North Kildare Beekeepers Association. The apiary manager, Professor Brendan Kavanagh, who is an experienced beekeeper took the bees into his care immediately. Each hive was inspected to ensure they were ‘queen right’ i.e. they had a queen bee in charge. Some of the staff visited the apiary recently to see the new arrivals. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the pure natural Irish honey they produce. Hopefully, we may have this in our gift shop in the autumn.
