Ancient Spirit, a 3 year old son of Invincible Spirit, trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho, was a very impressive winner of the Gr.2 Mehl–Mulhens–Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) yesterday at Cologne for owner breeders Stall Ullmann and Gestut Schlenderhan.
He was initially held up at the rear of the field, but was running keenly so jockey Filip Minarik allowed him to go to the front to set his own pace where he lengthened and pulled away from the field to win cosily by 4 1/2 lengths which included Fajjaj (Dawn Approach) finishing second and Fighting Irish (Camelot) a further length and a half back in third.
Ancient Spirit is the first foal out of Assisi (Galileo) a daughter of the unbeaten Gr.1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Amarette (Monsun). He is the second German 2000 Guineas winner in the pedigree after Aviso (Tertullian), won in 2007.
We look forward to seeing where he appears next!
