NATIONAL DEFENSE becomes the 15th individual Group 1 winner for Invincible Spirit after running away with the Group 1 PRIX JEAN-LUC LAGARDERE. In powering away from his rivals the lovely juvenile made a huge statement and will go into the winter as one of the favorites for classic success in 2017.

Bred by the highly successful Ecurie des Monceaux and Meridian International the talented son of Invincible Spirit was sold to Sun Studs at the Arqana August yearling Sale for €280,000. Trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, National Defense had already signaled his class before his Chantilly success having recorded a six length victory on debut at Deauville in August before finishing third in the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes just over three weeks ago.

Sunday saw National Defense return to running from the front, and having seen her stable star demolish his rivals by 4 lengths Criquette Head-Maarek appeared delighted with the colt’s performance. “I am so thrilled. You have to let him do his running in front like he did on his first career start—that’s the only way for him to relax. He has a high cruising speed and travels so well and quickens. This is a new owner in my yard and I think now we’ll keep him back until next season and get him ready for the Classics.”

The victory continued Invincible Spirit’s fabulous year, and makes it a total of 3 new individual Group 1 winners for 2016. National Defense will headline a very talented classic generation of 2017 for Invincible Spirit, and it is with great anticipation we look forward to seeing what this exciting colt is capable of.

Congratulations to all winning connections.
